Mount Lemmon, the highest peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, rises 9,171 feet in Coronado National Forest and is also known to the Tohono O'odham as Babad Do'ag, or Frog Mountain. Named for botanist Sara Plummer Lemmon after her 1881 ascent, it became a major southern Arizona destination because its high elevation brings cooler temperatures and regular winter snow. Near the summit, Summerhaven has long served as a retreat, rebuilding many cabins after the Aspen Fire in 2003. The mountain also contains the continent's southernmost ski area, an active observatory used for research and education, and a scenic highway that helps make it widely accessible.
