When the flag is folded, the living are left with a responsibility to remember those who fought and died for the freedom, liberty, peace, and prosperity enjoyed in America, to uphold the principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence, the nation's Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and to ensure that the ideas for which American men and women in uniform shed their blood do not perish. That duty also extends to the living, especially those who returned sick, wounded, disabled, or carrying unseen mental scars, by honoring the dead through bringing new hope and help to those who survived and by recommitting to the standards for which the fallen died.
