Born near Hatton, ND on May 19, 1896, Agnes Geelan graduated from Mayville State College in 1915, worked as an educator in Enderlin for 20 years, worked for women’s suffrage with the League of Women Voters in 1918, served as president of the ND American Legion Auxiliary in 1935, became the first female ND mayor from 1946 to 1954, became the first female elected to the ND Senate in 1950, was the first female nominated by a major party to run for Congress in 1948 and 1956, served on the ND Workmen’s Compensation Commission from 1966 to 1971, wrote three books, received the Liberty Bell Award from the ND Bar Association in 1975, was invited to the U.N. session on disarmament in June 1988 and to the U.N. Secretary General’s reception, was named a Newsweek American hero at age 92 for her peace activism, and died on March 10, 1993, after a long and exceedingly productive life.
