North Carolina was colonized from 1585 to 1587 by the first English settlers in America, was permanently settled circa 1650, and was the first to vote readiness for independence on April 12, 1776. South Carolina was formed in 1712 from part of Carolina, which was chartered in 1663, was first settled by the English in 1670, and was one of the 13 original states.
