The 3rd Battalion Gloucester County Militia, commanded by Col. Richard Somers, is honored for the service and sacrifice of its men during the Revolutionary War. Those killed in action included Pvt. Forrest Bellangy at Trenton #2, Pvt. John Cain while a prisoner of war in Tuckerton, Lt. John Lucas in a post-Red Bank fight, Capt. Henry Snell by friendly fire at Long Beach Island, Capt. Andrew Steelman while a prisoner of war at Long Beach Island, and three other unnamed men at Petticoat Bridge/Mt. Holly. Wounded men included Maj. Elijah Clark at Trenton #2, Pvt. Stephen Ford at Petticoat Bridge, Pvt. Hugh Jones in a post-Red Bank fight, Lt. John Lucas at Petticoat Bridge, Lt. David Scull at Long Beach Island, Pvt. John Steelman on a Cumberland County patrol, Pvt. John Thomas at Tuckerton, Lt. John Tilton in a post-Red Bank fight, and three other unnamed men in a raid at John Steelman’s house in Absecon. Prisoners of war included Pvt. David Denike and Pvt. John Ingersoll in the post-Chestnut Neck period, Pvt. Benjamin Endicott and Pvt. Patrick McCollum in a skirmish near Camden, Pvt. James Leeds in the Absecon Raid, Capt. Enoch Willits in the Cape May raid, and four other unnamed men, with most exchanged, James Leeds escaping, and Capt. Willits dying in prison.
