The Coventry Civil War Monument records the names of soldiers from Coventry, Vermont who served in the Civil War of 1861-1865 in units including Vermont infantry regiments, the 1st Vermont Cavalry, U.S. Sharpshooters, the 3rd Vermont Battery of Light Artillery, and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, and it also names Coventry men who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812-1814, and the Spanish American War. It was erected and presented to the town on August 14, 1912, by Riley E. Wright, a former townsman then living in Baltimore, Maryland, who had been captain of Company H, Frontier Guards, 15th Vermont Volunteers, organized at Coventry. The monument also bears battle names including Gettysburg, Cedar Creek, Cold Harbor, and Wilderness, along with patriotic and memorial verses honoring loyalty, sacrifice, and service to country.
