Major General George Owen Squier (1865-1934) was a noted soldier and scientist who graduated from West Point in 1887, later led the United States Signal Corps, served as Chief of the Army Air Service during World War I, and was military attaché in London during the postwar period. In his scientific work, he discovered the multiplex telegraph system, which made him world renowned, and he belonged to the National Academy of Sciences, London Physical Society, and the Royal Institute of Great Britain. Although army affiliations denied him royalties, he continued to contribute to invention and discovery and perfected much of his work at his country estate, which he opened as a free public park for the community. Showing great love for his community, he established a country club there in 1918 for people of the entire area. Originally called the “Golden Rule Club,” it operated by his single rule that visitors should leave the grounds and equipment as they found them. In 1918, Squier purchased the old mill, built in 1871, and converted it into a cottage. In 1919, Forest Hall was constructed as the park’s main meeting, dance, and banquet area. Other structures included rustic shelters, tea-houses, and a look-out tower, where he spent many hours in creative work while also offering its use to the public. Lapeer County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Commission now administers this quaint little country club.
