Copper Salmon Wilderness is a protected area in the Southern Oregon Coast Range within Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest, encompassing lands along the Elk and Sixes river forks. Established by the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 and signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 30, 2009, it was protected for its exceptional ecological value and uncommon river and forest quality. The area includes one of the nation’s largest remaining low-elevation old-growth forests and, along the North Fork of the Elk River, one of the healthiest salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout runs in the continental United States. It also shelters Port Orford cedar, marbled murrelets, and northern spotted owls.
