On April 5, 1865, Gen. Edward E. Potter left Georgetown with 2700 Federal troops to destroy the railroad between Sumter and Camden. On April 16, after a skirmish with militia under Col. James F. Pressley, he camped nearby at Spring Hill. The McKinley Barfield home that stood on this site bore scars of the skirmishing on its walls.
