Divis is a hill and broad moorland area northwest of Belfast, rising 1,568 feet to become the highest point in the Belfast Hills. Its name comes from the Irish Dubhais, meaning “black ridge,” and it closely joins neighboring Black Mountain. Geologically, it shares the Antrim Plateau’s basalt cap over limestone and lias clay. The summit is marked by the Divis transmitting station, a prominent landmark visible from Belfast and beyond. Controlled by the Ministry of Defence from 1953 to 2004, the area later passed to the National Trust, which expanded recreation through walking trails while also protecting wildlife and improving access as a major urban green space.
