Shortly after the gathering of the church in 1635, Hingham’s first meeting house was raised within a palisade. The first burying ground and first school house were built prior to 1661, and a fort was erected in 1676. These landmarks stood upon this hill, whose westerly part was removed in 1831. Derby Academy, founded in 1784, was the first co-educational school in America.
