Cupillari Observatory is a small college-run astronomical observatory in northeastern Pennsylvania, associated with La Plume and nearby Fleetville, and operated by Keystone College. Founded in 1973 by Keystone professor Thomas G. Cupillari, it grew from his purchase of its dome and telescope from television personality Dave Garroway, an unusual beginning that ties the site to both academic astronomy and mid-twentieth-century broadcasting. Later named for Cupillari, the observatory was shaped by his long career and remained part of the college’s science program and public astronomy work for decades. He retired from teaching in 2007, stepped down as director in 2015, and died in 2021.
