A society was organized here in 1804 to promote divine teachings, and the first building was erected shortly thereafter. As the congregation grew, successive houses of worship were built in 1835, 1856, and 1898. Ira D. Sankey, a noted evangelist singer and hymnologist, was converted here to God's service and accepted into this fellowship in 1858.
