Thomas L. Smith, better known as "Peg Leg" Smith, lived from 1801 to 1866 and was a mountain man, prospector, and spinner of tall tales. Legends about his lost mine grew through the years, and countless people searched the desert for its fabulous wealth. The gold mine may possibly be within a few miles of this monument.
