Captain Juan Bautista de Anza and Father Francisco Garces opened this route in 1774. In 1775, Anza led an expedition of 240 soldiers and settlers from Sonora to found San Francisco, and the group encamped near El Vado, The Ford, for three days and two nights, December 20-22, 1776.
