Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences served Peoria, Illinois, as a public museum of science and culture from 1965 to 2012. It emerged from a campaign by the Arts and Science Council’s 26 member groups to create a shared home for exhibitions and education, raising $1 million in 1961 for construction on Lake Avenue. Its planetarium opened in 1963 before the museum galleries opened in 1965, and the 36-foot structure later became the sun in a mock solar system recognized in 1992 by Guinness Book of Records as the largest to-scale example of its kind. Renamed in 1978, the museum ultimately passed its role and assets to the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
