The 385th Bombardment Group (H), activated in February 1943 and deactivated in August 1945, flew 297 missions, received 2 unit citations for Regensburg and Zwickau, lost 129 aircraft, and suffered 409 lives lost. Its combat units were Headquarters Squadron and the 548th, 549th, 550th, and 551st Bomb Squadrons, and its support units were the 424th Air Service Group, 877th Chemical Company Detachment . 155, and 18th AWS. Those who survived dedicated this monument to their fallen comrades who gave their last full measure of devotion in a sacred cause, alongside the quoted words of John Gillespie Magee, Jr.: "I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace / Where never lark, or ever eagle flew / And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod / The high untrespassed sanctity of space, / Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
