The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden is a major year-round attraction in northeast Oklahoma City, spanning 130 acres and housing more than 2,000 animals from over 500 species. Accredited by national zoo and museum organizations, it is organized around large themed habitats such as Expedition Africa, Sanctuary Asia, Great EscAPE, Cat Forest/Lion Overlook, and Oklahoma Trails. Alongside children’s exhibits, reptile displays, and visitor attractions, the zoo has evolved significantly over time, replacing older enclosures with more naturalistic settings. Its history also includes remembered animals, the controversial 1962 death of Tusko during an LSD experiment, and a broader shift toward education, botanical identity, and expansive habitats.
