Hammond Bridge, a historic covered bridge west of Hamilton, Iowa, carries a 178-foot Howe covered through truss across North Cedar Creek. It was created in 1894 after Samuel B. Hammond requested a crossing near his property; the county supervisors examined the site, hired S.F. Collins in June, and the bridge was finished later that year. Its history includes a 1977 truck accident that closed it for two years before it reopened in 1979. Although channelization of North Cedar Creek and a newer bridge shifted regular traffic elsewhere, Hammond Bridge remains a notable survivor of Iowa’s covered-bridge era and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
