The First Congregational Church of Plymouth began as the Ecclesiastical Society of Northbury, established in 1739. Its first meetinghouse was completed during the 1760s, a second meetinghouse was built in the 1790s, and the present day church was built in 1838. A view of Plymouth Center looking westward from Main Street shows the second meetinghouse on the left side of the Green and St. Peter's Episcopal Church, built in 1796, on the far right facing North Street.
