John J. Tyler Arboretum in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania, occupies 650 acres of gardens, historic plantings, and natural woodland on land first transferred by William Penn to Thomas Minshall in 1681. Held by eight generations of one family until 1944, it took shape as an arboretum in 1825 when Jacob and Minshall Painter began planting more than 1,000 varieties of trees and shrubs. Its grounds include notable champion and record-size trees, later collections such as the pinetum and rhododendrons, and features like Pink Hill. Laura Tyler established the nonprofit arboretum in 1944 as a memorial to John J. Tyler, and the property joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
