After the Chickasaw Nation officially vacated the Capitol in 1910, many changes took place on the grounds, and the exact location of the well eventually became a mystery. In July of 2004, workers repairing the Capitol roof made an unexpected discovery when rain and heavy machinery opened a large hole outside the building's northeast corner. Closer observation showed that the newly discovered hole was the Capitol Well. Excavation of the Capitol Well began in 2005.
