Raynal C. Bolling, a lawyer, patriot, and soldier, was born on 1 Sept. 1877 at Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was killed in action during the German offensive near Amiens, France, on 26 March 1918, becoming the first American officer of high rank to fall in the World War.
