Wolf Creek Falls Preserve includes land with human presence dating back as far as 8,000 years ago, when the first inhabitants in this region, whose descendants were known as the Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands, relied heavily on hunting and used the streams and Bozen Kill Ravine as routes toward the Mahicannatuck, or Hudson River, and lands to the north for trapping and trading. The arrival of Europeans in the 1600s brought epidemics that decimated these Indigenous populations, and survivors were eventually displaced as conflict arose with colonists. This parcel was once part of the 12,000-square-mile Van Rensselaer estate of Rensselaerwyck. In 1864, Andrew Van Auken received title to the property and cleared the land, and stone walls still visible once enclosed sheep raised for the felt industry. The land later supplied quarry stone for construction of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad that bisects it, and it was also used as a pheasant hunting facility and grazing land for beef cattle. In 1976, biology professors Patricia and Stephen Brown purchased the property, and after Patricia Stocking Brown died in 2004 and Stephen Brown retired to Michigan in 2006, he donated the 145-acre property to the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy to be maintained and preserved for public enjoyment; the two private residences that remain are the Brown family's original homestead. Its present hardwood forest is second growth, and paths cleared by the Browns extend more than three miles through the property past two streams, multiple waterfalls, a wetland, and varied plants and animals. The streams merge just north of the property, and Wolf Creek flows to the Bozen Kill, which eventually enters the Watervliet Reservoir on the Normans Kill. The preserve is part of the larger Bozenkill Conservation Corridor, a protected area of more than 400 acres that includes the Bozen Kill Preserve and reflects a broader effort to connect the Catskills to the Adirondacks while balancing human use, wildlife, and the preservation of distinctive plant species and geology for future generations.
