Starve Hollow State Recreation Area in Vallonia, Indiana, is a 280-acre protected area formed from part of Jackson–Washington State Forest and centered on Starve Hollow Lake. It offers fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, and nature study. Although the lake is shallow from sediment washing in from nearby fields and much of its northern and eastern surface is thick with aquatic vegetation, it supports a managed fishery stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish. In 2008, plans were announced to drain the lake to repair the dam and remove gizzard shad. The surrounding hardwood forest shelters diverse wildlife, and two campgrounds serve visitors.
