One-fifth mile to the south stood the site of a stagecoach relay station where Benjamine and Mellinger operated a stage line beginning in 1880 between Columbia, SD and Jamestown, ND. Service took two days each way, and passengers could be fed and lodged at the station. At night, a lantern on a high pole guided the stage across the prairie to the ford at Bear Creek, where fresh horses were put on from a 16-stall stable dug into the hill. The coming of the railroad in 1882 made the stagecoach obsolete, and the relay station remained on that site until it was destroyed by fire in 1977.
