Halquist Quarry was started by John Halquist in 1929 when he reopened an abandoned water-filled quarry north of here. The original owner was Sussex-Lisbon pioneer James Weaver, and stone was quarried there as early as 1839-41. In the 1860s John Ready opened a big operation, and later John Kearney took over until the turn of the century. The quarry furnished stone for Sussex's St. Alban's church in 1864-66 and again for its bell tower in 1875. John Halquist was assisted by his son Al, then Al's sons Bud and Perry ran the operation, and later Perry's sons Tom and Bill continued the business as the fourth generation.
