Blackhoof, also known as Cut-The-We-Ka-Saw or Catahecassa, was born in Florida about 1721 and arrived in this vicinity in 1783. Principal Chief of the Shawnee Indian Nation, he had a two story 18'x24' log house erected here in 1822 in a clearing of the vast forest. His body lay in state here before removal to a nearby ridge for burial, and many deer and wild game were placed outside the house for the funeral feast. The site of a former Indian village at Saint Johns was initially called Blackhoofs Town.
