Located in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Neil Armstrong’s hometown, the Armstrong Air and Space Museum opened in 1972 after a statewide effort launched just after Apollo 11 to honor Armstrong and Ohio’s broader achievements in aviation and spaceflight. Designed to resemble a lunar base, it presents spaceflight history from the early Space Race through the Space Shuttle era. Its best-known artifact is the original Gemini 8 spacecraft, along with Armstrong’s spacesuits, an Apollo 11 Moon rock, and other items linking American and Soviet-era space history. Later additions, including expanded galleries and a STEM center, have strengthened its role in preserving and interpreting aerospace history.
