First Ladies National Historic Site
History
3
In Canton, Ohio, this museum and historic site is devoted to the history, public roles, and legacy of America’s first ladies. It grew from Mary Regula’s campaign to improve research on presidential spouses, leading to the National First Ladies’ Library in 1996 and a federal historic site in 2000. The site centers on two buildings: the Ida Saxton McKinley House, birthplace and childhood home of Ida Saxton McKinley and later home to William and Ida McKinley for more than twenty years, and the Education and Research Center, which provides exhibits, a White House Library replica, educational space, and offices.
