Colonel Jonathan Buck arrived in what is now Bucksport in 1762 aboard his sloop Sally with a group of men from Haverhill, Massachusetts, to survey land granted to them by the Massachusetts colonial court. The first buildings were erected in 1764 in what was then Plantation No. 1. At Mill Stream, Buck's sawmill produced boards, staves, shingles, and clapboards for the township's houses and businesses and for sale in Boston and beyond. Other early buildings included houses, barns, a trading house, a smokehouse for fish, and a blacksmith's shop.
