Hill 582 became closely associated with the Gonce family, who for many years before the hill took that name chose it as a favorite camping site and train viewing spot. Roy O. Gonce planted the first eucalyptus tree there in 1994, which later became the tallest tree, and also donated the eucalyptus tree growing at the northwest corner that same year. In 1998, "Sue's Tree" was planted after the death of his wife, Susan. The hill also preserves the memory of the historic 1913 Alray tunnels, the original 582A signal mast at the northeast corner of Hill 582, and Chard L. Walker, a friend, mentor, and fellow railfan known for his authoritative book and photographs of Cajon Pass. Walker was a historian and longtime Santa Fe Railroad employee for 36 years, retiring in 1983, and he lived and worked at Summit from 1951 until the Summit depot closed in 1967.
