In 1887, Rock Hill's first telephone line ran from the Rock Hill Buggy Company office to the freight train depot and was installed by John Gary Anderson to receive timely information about deliveries. This small telephone system laid the foundation for the Rock Hill Telephone Company, which was established in 1895.
