Snowbasin, on Mount Ogden northeast of Salt Lake City, is one of the oldest continuously operating ski areas in the United States, opening in 1939 after rehabilitation of the Wheeler Creek watershed and development by the U.S. Forest Service and skier Alf Engen. Early access improved with a Civilian Conservation Corps road in 1940, and expansion in the 1950s under Sam Huntington helped turn it into a larger destination. After Earl Holding bought the resort in 1984, major investment and a 1996 land exchange enabled further growth and Olympic development. Snowbasin hosted skiing events during the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and remains one of Utah’s leading resorts.
