Red Butte is a prominent landmark on the Coconino Plateau in northern Arizona, between the San Francisco volcanic field and the Grand Canyon, and the most notable landform in that part of the Kaibab National Forest. Known to the Havasupai as Wii'i Gdwiisa, or “clenched fist mountain,” it holds sacred importance. Its geology includes sandstones of the Moenkopi Formation, overlain by Shinarump Conglomerate and capped by volcanic rock. A trail leads to the summit, where views include the San Francisco Peaks and only the highest part of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. At the top stands a historic Red Butte fire lookout tower.
