Daniel Cresap, a pioneer settler born in 1728 near Havre de Grace, Maryland, was the son of Colonel Thomas Cresap and gave his name to Dan's Mountain and Dan's Rock. He fought in the French and Indian War. By his first wife, whose name is unknown, he had one son; by his second wife, Ruth Swearingen, daughter of Maryland Van Swearingen, he had ten children. A member of the Ohio Company and a commissioner in the founding of Cumberland in 1787, he was, with vast land holdings along the Potomac, a patriarch of the region and was known proverbially as the poor man's friend. He died in 1798 at his home in Rawlings.
