West Union Covered Bridge spans Sugar Creek near Montezuma, Indiana, and was built in 1876 as the third bridge at this crossing after damage to the Harrison Covered Bridge. A two-span Burr Arch Truss bridge by Joseph J. Daniels, it is the longest standing covered bridge in Parke County and one of the nation’s best-preserved Burr truss examples. The crossing stood on an early Indiana State Highway route established in 1827 between Fort Wayne and Terre Haute and also carried stagecoach traffic toward Lafayette. Recognized for its preservation and importance in Indiana covered bridge history, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and named a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
