The Terhune-Gardner House was the pre-Revolutionary homestead of David Terhune (1713-1792), a weaver and patriot official who served as Freeholder from New Barbadoes Township from 1779 to 1785, and of his son, John D. Terhune, a Freeholder in 1787. During the Revolutionary War, the farm was raided by the British four times. From 1807 it became the country estate of Thomas T. Gardner, gentleman, of New York City, who erected a large north wing about 1808, and it remained owned by the Gardner family until 1907.
