Susquehanna State Park is a 20-acre riverfront park on the West Branch Susquehanna River in western Williamsport, developed for boating and day use. Its site reflects the area’s transportation and lumbering history: it once formed part of the West Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal, which operated from 1834 until flood destruction in 1889, and it also includes a remnant of the Susquehanna Boom, used from 1851 to 1909 to catch floating timber for nearby sawmills. After flood-control levees left this tract outside the protected system, officials turned it into a recreational area that opened in 1961. Today, paddlewheeler cruises, fishing, boating, and picnicking define its use.
