General Sherman is a giant sequoia in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in California and, by volume, the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth. Officially named for William Tecumseh Sherman, it was reportedly given that name in 1879 by James Wolverton, though the story may be apocryphal. The tree was briefly renamed for Karl Marx when the Kaweah Colony controlled the land, but its earlier name returned after Sequoia National Park was established in 1892. About 83.8 meters tall and estimated to be 2,300 to 2,700 years old, it became the standard-bearer for tree size by volume and has endured both branch loss and wildfire threat without losing its standing.
