The President is a giant sequoia in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park, east of Visalia, California. Rising about 247 feet and measuring roughly 27 feet across at the base, it ranks among the forest’s most imposing trees. By total wood volume in its trunk and branches, it is recognized as the world’s second-largest tree, and it is also regarded as the oldest known living sequoia at about 3,240 years old. Its dense crown, massive upward-reaching limbs, white upper branch, and long burn scar illustrate both its distinctive form and the role of fire in Sierra Nevada ecology. It was named in 1923 for President Warren G. Harding.
