Cal Ripken, Jr. said that to be remembered at all is pretty special. On September 6th, 1995, he broke a record that had stood for 57 years when he surpassed Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak of 2,130 games. In the fifth inning of the Orioles' game against the California Angels, the record became official, and Baltimore fans responded with a standing ovation that lasted nearly a half hour and led to his historic Victory Lap around Camden Yards, where he reached into the stands to shake hands with loyal fans. He later voluntarily ended his consecutive game streak at 2,632 games.
