Aztec Butte is a 6,312-foot sandstone summit in Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky District, near landmarks such as Upheaval Dome, Mesa Arch, and Green River Overlook. Formed from Navajo Sandstone created by wind-blown dunes about 170 million years ago in the Jurassic Period, it became known for a shape likened to Mexico’s Pyramid of the Sun. Long before the national park existed, Ancestral Puebloan people used this high mesa country for hunting and seed gathering and built stone granaries near the top around AD 1200 to 1300. These preserved remains give the butte both geologic and archaeological significance.
