Raccoon Branch Wilderness is a 4,225-acre protected backcountry area in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area near Sugar Grove in southwestern Virginia. Designated by Congress in 2009 and managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the national wilderness system, it preserves rugged mountain terrain of steep ridges, narrow hollows, cold streams, and elevations rising to High Point on Dickey Ridge. The Appalachian Trail and Virginia Highlands Trail cross the area, while strict wilderness rules limit vehicles, bikes, group size, and camping. Its forests, streams, and possible old-growth stands support diverse plant life and rare species, including stoneflies, birds, fish, and habitat tied to endangered mussels in the Holston watershed.
