Saddleback Ledge Light stands on a rocky islet between Isle au Haut and Vinalhaven near the southeastern entrance to Penobscot Bay, marking the bay’s main eastern passage along an exposed stretch of the Maine coast. Established in 1839, with the present lighthouse built to a design by Alexander Parris, it was the second light placed on Penobscot Bay and remains one of Maine’s older surviving lighthouses. The granite tower includes a ten-sided lantern house, and its interior once held keeper’s quarters and storage. Automated in 1954, it is valued both as a navigational landmark and as an early example of Maine lighthouse construction.
