Goose Rocks Light stands in Penobscot Bay near North Haven on a ledge at the eastern entrance to the Fox Islands Thoroughfare, a busy passage between North Haven and Vinalhaven. Established in 1890, it served an important regional route used during the height of Vinalhaven’s granite quarrying and growing summer travel to both islands. The lighthouse is a compact sparkplug design, a tapered four-level cast-iron structure on a concrete base, with keeper’s quarters once on the second level and the lantern at the top. Automated in 1963, it remains an active aid to navigation under Coast Guard maintenance.
