Heron Neck Light stands on Green’s Island in Vinalhaven, Maine, at the south end of Penobscot Bay, where it was established in 1854 to guide vessels to Vinalhaven’s main port and through the Hurricane Channel. Built for a coast marked by islands, ledges, and narrow passages, it remained important as the area grew from a fishing and agricultural community into a granite-quarrying and resort center. The station preserves a largely intact light complex, including the original circular brick tower, a keeper’s house built in 1895–96, an unusual stone oil house, and a fog signal building. It was automated in 1984.
