About four miles farther up the Cosumnes River, on July 12, 1851, Jared Sheldon, a former employee of John Sutter and holder of the original Mexican land grant Rancho Omochumnes, was confronted by a large party of miners whose claims were threatened by a dam he was building. The fatalities then and on the following day ended the Riot on the Cosumnes. Killed were Jared Sheldon of Underhill, Vt., James M. Johnson of Lancaster, Ia., and Edward Cody of Fox River, Il. Wounded were Calvin Dickerson of Bernan Co., Mi., Emanuel Bush of Desmoine, Co., Ia., and one unnamed miner.
