Grave of Dr. Carlos Montezuma
History
12
Carlos Montezuma, regarded as the greatest of the educated Apaches, was a Mohave-Apache who was taken captive by Pima Indians at the age of six and sold to a white man who educated him as a physician. He built a splendid medical practice in Chicago and became a champion of Indian rights, but he died of tuberculosis in a brush hut near here after refusing all medical care.
