The site was home to the first Baptist Meeting House, built in 1815 and torn down in 1907. Through the efforts of Maj. H.A. Shorey and others over many years, the land was deeded in trust to Farragut Post 27 G.A.R. for a Memorial Park in 1908. In 1928, the park was deeded to the Farragut Memorial Association.
